Penguin, The Flightless Bird

Hello again! :)
A few weeks back I was assigned to describe an animal in front of the class for an English task. Now, I will present to you a tidbit of my task, talking about penguins, one of the most unique animals on the planet :)

Penguins belong to the Aves class in the Animalia kingdom. They have a few of the same characteristics of a normal bird such as beak and feathers. They are commonly found on the Southern Hemisphere, mainly in the South Pole. But there are also a few species that lives in the Galapagos Island on the Northern Hemisphere. Since not a lot of people are able to view these cute creatures on their natural habitats, some zoos have considered in taking penguins so they are much easier for people to visit.

The average characteristics of a penguins is as follows:
Height      : 30 cm to 120 cm
Weight     : 10 pounds to 88 pounds
Life span  : 15 until 20 years
Diet          : Little fishes, shrimps, krills, etc.

In total, there are 18 species of penguins known to man and some have started to be considered as close to extinction.

Penguins are monogamous. They only have one partner in their lifetime. They breed in mating season and produce eggs. Once eggs are layed, the female and male penguins take turns on incubating it, lasting for about 35 days until the eggs finally hatch.

The most unique characteristic of a penguin is that even they are close relatives of birds, they are not able to fly. Penguin is one of the two species of birds that cannot fly, the other one is an ostrich. They do have wings on the side of their bodies, but they are rather designed for swimming and hunt for food in the water. These wings are called flippers. Also, because they often spend their time more on water than land, their feathers (except for the ones on their flippers) are waterproof. One more awesome thing about these flippers is that they are strong enough to be used for self defense!

Though they walk funny, they are highly social animals. Wherever they go, they must go in packs. Rarely you would see a penguin walks by itself.

So those are just a few things I can tell you about penguins! If you'd like to know more about this wonderful animal you can search for them on the internet (I got pretty much of my sources from it too anyway hehe) and now I'll post a picture of a cute quote with cute penguins on it :D
